This is the most perfect, fucked up original gay love story I've ever read, and so addictive it is totally unputdownable. The story begins with rape and torture - only for hatred, in time, to turn into a relationship that both lovers end up being willing to die for. The authors' style is amazing, although a bit heavy on the present progressive and fond of choppy sentence structure, the main characters are fully fleshed out individuals, and the plot moves along with both grace and restraint. Now if only the sequel, Book Two: Mercenaries, were as good, I'd be deliriously happy. However, the second book turns Dan and Vadim's painfully won loving, exclusive relationship into a gay man's military porn fantasy with constantly changing new sex partners and threesomes much in the vein of the infamous Nifty Archive. Slashers, be advised that stopping at the end of Book One might be preferable. |
