Batman is a fandom I've experienced solely through fan fiction. Bruce Wayne is the darkest of the comic book heroes I know, and none of the earlier movies do justice to the past that shaped him. The secrecy he has to live in in order to fight Gotham's criminals the way he does - cloaked and hidden in the shadows - means that very few people are allowed to see behind the shallow fa¸ade of Gotham's millionaire and playboy. Only a handful of people know Wayne as he truly is - Alfred, his butler, and his ward, Richard Grayson. From there, it is not much of a stretch to have Wayne find more than a pupil in his young ward and have the two men share more than the nightly thrill of watching over Gotham's streets.
Then along came "Batman Begins" in 2005. It reshaped and revitalized the fandom and promoted another relationship in which the mentor/pupil dynamic was radically different: Henri Ducard / Bruce Wayne. One thing, though, still hasn't been written: a story that consequently reconciles both relationships and their successive impact on Wayne's character.


The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Please abide by these criteria and only read what you're comfortable with/allowed to access. I will not be responsible if you don't.

Summary: Not only is a new superhero in town, but Dick has to face some difficulties with his life and relationship with Bruce.
Review: Since I know next to nothing about Batman canon I cannot judge James' accuracy on that part, although it all sounds very plausible. I like this series as a coming-of-age story. Dick grows up and doesn't let even the fact that he and Bruce become involved diametrically influence his need for independence and self-reliance. Since all stories are written from Dick's point of view, we only get glimpses at what Bruce might be feeling. I would dearly love a sequel that reunites the two of them and that maybe offers us, the readers, an opportunity to find out for ourselves what Bruce hides behind his emotionless mask.

Summary: Dick tries to heal his wings and deal with homophobes and a new villain at the same time.
Review: While I like Rimau's portrayal of Bruce and Dick and their struggles to recocile the needs of the two parts of their psyches, I sometimes wish that her stories were a bit darker. They fit in well into the later Batman movies universe, but I think I prefer the more driven, tormented Bruce Wayne we've been introduced to in Batman Begins.
