angel & buffy the vampire slayer fan fiction

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a novelty when it started its first season, combining protagonists with typical teenager problems with the supernatural and giving an adolescent girl center stage. Buffy never descended to soap opera levels and was one of a handful of shows that dared play with involved, season-spanning story arcs. And it was one of the few shows I was a fan of that I never needed to see slash in to like. Sadly, its last (some say, its last two) seasons showed a visible decline in quality due to the fact that its creator, Joss Whedon, had focused on other projects. The spinoff series Angel was darker still and had considerably more intrigue and dissent between its main characters. While slash between Angel and Spike is quite canon, I was (and still am) more interested in the relationship between Buffy, the Slayer, and the man - the vampire - she, by rights, ought to kill, not fall for. Fanon developed ways to deal with that conflict long before the show ever did... but judge for yourselves.

The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Please abide by these criteria and only read what you're comfortable with/allowed to access. I will not be responsible if you don't.

Review: Barb's trilogy is an ensemble-piece that focuses on the relationship between Buffy and Spike. Returning to life in a different way post "The Gift", Barb's Buffy is less broken and soon able to see that Spike's love for her is real. Even the removal of his chip in "Necessary Evils" doesn't tear them apart, and Spike manages to hold onto his ties to the Slayer and her circle of friends and refrain from feeding. Barb depicts him and Buffy as glorious predators, secure in what they feel for each other and confident even in the face of Prophecy and a different return of the First Evil. Add to that effortless POV switches, good style, various cameo appearances from "Angel", a slew of original plot ideas, and you have a novel you cannot put down until the end.

Picks up about 4 months after "Grave.". Review: I haven't been as caught up in a BtVS story in a long time as in "Perfect World". cousinjean's grasp of the characters is amazing, but not as amazing as the alternate reality (Wishverse) she creates in this story. She knows her canon, and all her characters are undeniably them. What if Adam hadn't been destroyed - what if the Initiative hadn't put the chip inside Spike's head? Spike goes through his personal hells in more than one reality, but the end leaves us with a hopeful note that after all this everything will be different.

Review: Eurydice's stories dragged me in almost against my will. I would have never thought of bringing together Buffy and 19th century William, but Eurydice managed to come up with an original and utterly believable explanation for both the time travel and the lack of impact on timeline and canon and weaves a romance that manages to transcend a century as well as William having been turned. Throughout both stories, I became more and more impressed with the author's imagination and the ease she shows in assigning new roles to many later-series canon characters. The end result is closer to an original story than an AU - but one that is definitely worth reading.

Review: Back in the early days of the BtVS fandom, Lynn's epic "Secrets and Lies" was the reason I abandoned my shipper preference for Buffy/Angel and fell in love with the idea of Buffy and Spike instead. Lynn has a very good grasp of early-series Spike's character and, while she refuses to turn him into a tame copy of canon-Angel, succeeds in painting a believable picture of a possible relationship between two arch-enemies. Full of plot-twists, tragedy, angst, and sex, her series might be a bit close to Harlequin novels sometimes, but that doesn't detract from the fact that she is a terrific writer and that "Secrets and Lies" is utterly addictive. I am not certain her e-mail addy is still existent, and I fear the story might never be finished, but - read it.

Review: Saber used to be an unbelievably prolific writer, and her stories were a substitute for my weekly "Buffy" fix in the hiatus between season 3 and 4. Inspired by various spoilers, she came up with different reasons as for why Spike should help Buffy and thought up several scenarios anticipating them becoming lovers. Her stories are all very sexy (although that soon starts to become a bit repetitious), and she clearly loves Spike-whumping. But her stories have that certain something that keeps you clued to the monitor until you've reached the end - so enjoy!
