man from u.n.c.l.e. fan fiction

Man from U.N.C.L.E. is a fandom I came to more or less by accident. It being one of the pre-internet classics, I'd been aware of both the show and the fact that in form of File 40, there was a big, unexplored fanfic archive out there. So one day, on loose ends, I ventured over there and fell in love with the Solo-Kuryakin dynamic. Both men reminded me a lot of Kirk and Spock of Star Trek: TOS - Solo was the suave womanizer, Kuryakin the closed-off scientist -, and their relationship appealed to me. The one episode of the show I managed to catch subsequently was a huge disappointment and must have been from season 2 or 3 since its plot was so harebrained it hurt. Still, NS/IK slash continued to fascinate me, perhaps because of the radical change required in Solo's mindset if he ever fell in love with a man, as well as because of the rather intolerant time of the 60s, in which, as well as within the organisation of U.N.C.L.E., such a relationship was nigh on impossible.

The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Review: It is almost impossible to stop reading when in the middle of a story by Jane Fairfax, and when finished, one usually wishes for a sequel - often because the author ends her stories on an unhappy note. Thankfully, that is not the case in both stories listed above. Jane's style is subtle, yet pictoral, and she brings across her characters' emotions in a very believable way. Told from Illya's POV, in "Becalmed" Solo is the confident seducer while Kuryakin fluctuates wildly between different moods, afraid of changing the status quo and yet unable to resist his friend. In "Body Language", Napoleon and Illya struggle with the implications of Solo's imminent move up to Section 1.

Review: In this story, Kellie proves that she's an incredible writer beyond due South as well and brings new wind into a more and more cliché-laden fandom. A refreshingly new plot, good characterizations, her usual meticulous style and insight into her protagonists' motivations make "Safe Harbor" a joy to read. Add to that a vulnerable Solo who does a lot of soul-searching, a legitimate issue that keeps the partners apart and a similarly believable resolution to their problem, throw in some hot sex in which for a change Napoleon is the novice and the more passive participant, and you won't able to stop reading until the very end. Unequaled.

The Fans From U.N.C.L.E. is the most comprehensive fan site on the internet with a lot of background information about the show and its history. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Episode Guide by Bill Koenig has reviews of all episodes of the original show as well as of a few of its spinoff, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., plus a summary of several scripts that never made it to production.
