The internet is a wonderful place, and almost any fandom has at least one prolific fan out there who's doing their best to promote the source material/pairing of their choice. Sometimes, a fandom is rare because it is either fairly obscure or because its slash potential isn't very obvious. Sometimes, a pairing is rare, perhaps because it goes against what the majority considers their OTP. Sometimes, a fandom is quite well-known and even produced quite a bit of slash fiction, but has few outstanding stories. All these miscellaneous fandoms are represented here... for the time being. They might make it to their own pages sometime in the future should I discover a few more stories worth recommending. For now - enjoy. And don't hesitate to contact me if you think you've found a story you believe should be represented here.

Action! Action!

Valeria Philomena Fate (aka Vali)
e-mail: violetaugustine@yahoo.com Website: This Side of Paradise v6.0
livejournal: ljvioletisblue
Title: Fire and Ice offsite Story Length: ~ 110 KB
Series: Prequel to "Strong Sweets" Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes
Pairing: Peter Dragon / Cole Riccardi Time Frame: Mid-Season 1
Genres: Character Study, Episode Related, First Time, Humor Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Peter's attempts to keep his new film's star in the closet don't work out at all like he planned.
Review: I became a rabid Action! fan with that certain blowjob scene in "1x04 - Blowhard" (I was squeeing at my tv at the time, I believe), and thereafter was forever spoilt for the series' predominant slash pairing of Peter/Stuart. Valeria sealed that fate by posting this story as well as the first two parts of its sequel that today, unfortunately, are no longer on the web. Her knowledge of pop culture, the Who's Who of Hollywood and the details of its hottest gossip all give her stories an immediacy that, combined with her enviable grasp of Peter Dragon's character and mannerisms, read as true as the canon material. Peter discovers he might just be gay, and that's a complication he really could have done without.

Title: Cadfael in Exile offsite Story Length: ~ 44 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Cadfael / Hugh Beringar Time Frame: Post-"Brother Cadfael's Penance"
Genres: Character Study, Drama, Friendship Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Banished from the monastery, Cadfael resolves to live out the rest of his life in Wales, but Hugh Beringar does not intend to let him go that easily.
Review: Cadfael slash will always have two major obstacles to overcome before I can accept it, and said obstacles are Cadfael's age and his inner peace with his decision to abandon the world and turn to God as a Benedictine. I've always loved the deep friendship between Cadfael and Shropshire's deputy sheriff in Ellis Peters' books, and believe the slash potential only increased with the good looks of the tv adaptions' first Hugh Beringar. Sphinxvictorian manages brilliantly to circumnavigate Cadfael's vows as a monk by having him banished by a triumphing Prior Robert; however, she still returns Cadfael's world to its customary ebb and flow in the end. Cadfael and Hugh have a moment out of time - one they shall treasure, and yet one that cannot persist.

Merry Lynne (aka Meredith Lynne)

Title: Translation offsite Story Length: ~ 44 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Damien Vryce / Gerald Tarrant Time Frame: Post-Trilogy
Genres: Fix-It, Friendship Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Having battled - and lost - against fae-born creatures on Mount Zenai, Damien Vryce is rescued by a stranger.
Review: In "Translation", Damien Vryce doesn't know how to live without the sword - until an old friend finds him again. Merry attempts to fix the rather bleak ending of the third book by reuniting Vryce and Tarrant amidst ice and snow in a cave, and suggests that the forces governing Erna excluded Vryce from Tarrant's enforced break with his past. Her writing - including characterizations and dialogue - is as outstanding as ever, and her version of Vryce and Tarrant's reunion feels unavoidable and very much like a logial progression from what we've learnt of their characters. Impressive.

Title: Hath No Man offsite Story Length: ~ 21 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Damien Vryce / Gerald Tarrant Time Frame: Mid-"Crown of Shadows"
Genres: AU, First Time, Fix-It, Friendship Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Gerald Tarrant successfully applies traditional methods to the problem of getting his man.
Review: shalott also rewrites canon, only she interferes at the moment of Andrys and Gerald Tarrant's confrontation in the Dark Forest and lets the former Prophet turned human survive. Her writing is as flawless as ever, and her skillful handling of Vryce's POV gives the story an inmediacy that lets the reader emphatize and almost be present in the new world after Tarrant's sacrifice at Mount Shaitan - a new world in which Vryce is excommunicated from his Church and in which Tarrant still has a long way to go to atone for 900 years of sin and evil.

Title: The Big Picture offsite Story Length: ~ 189 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes, child abuse, violence
Pairing: Johnny Smith / Walt Bannerman Time Frame: Season 3
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Johnny experiences strange blackouts and discovers unconsciousness is sometimes preferable to the harsh truth.
Title: Dirigo offsite Story Length: ~ 193 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash, Het Warnings: none
Pairing: Johnny Smith / Walt Bannerman, Sarah & Walt Bannerman, Sarah Bannerman & Johnny Smith, Sarah Bannerman & Johnny Smith & Walt Bannerman Time Frame: Season 2
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Drama, Threesome Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Johnny, Walt and Sarah struggle with closeness and distance in turn while Johnny's visions provide him with a retreat for the threatening holocaust - a former resort in the wilds of Maine.
Review: Speranza has immersed herself so successfully into the bleak truth always in the background of the show that both her stories - aside from the sexual angle - read like the better episodes of the series. When put on the spot, Johnny and Walt don't avoid making difficult (if morally questionable) decisions and thereby save others. The experience brings them even closer together, and whether they catch a serial killer or prepare for the Apocalypse, both men (and in the later instance also Sarah) need that closeness to deal with the reality of their situation. Never bleak, always tender, and irrevocably them, Speranza's take on Johnny and Walt makes both novels a joy to read.

Title: Save As (story notes) offsite Story Length: ~ 140 KB
Series: Part of author's "Die Hard" series, but can stand alone Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: John McClane / Matthew Farrell Time Frame: Post-"Live Free or Die Hard"
Genres: Action/Adventure, Angst, Challenge Response, Character Study, Established Relationship Recommended: 13 Jul 2008
Summary: John and Matt finally have to define their relationship.
Review: I've loved all parts of this universe that the author has written so far, but this - this story simply blew me away. The style is as flawless as always, and the length doesn't hurt, but most of all it's poisontaster's insight into the characters and their motivations that make this story so outstanding. Originally, neither man is quite ready to admit that what they have together is real, or what their relationship truly entails, but they finally realize that hiding from reality is no longer an option. Perfect.

Title: Too Good To Be True offsite Story Length: ~ 30 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Harry Dresden / Hrothbert of Bainbridge ("Bob the Skull") Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Angst, Drama, Episode Related, Friendship Recommended: 11 Nov 2007
Summary: It's embarrassing to still have a crush on your teacher twenty-five years later.
Review: belmanoir picks up where episode 1x10 - "What About Bob?", left off, and lets Harry and Bob work through the emotions stirred up during the latter's brief return to life. I love Harry's voice in this, and Bob's unwillingness to believe that one of his dearest dreams might have actually come true. The author was the first one to bring wizard and ghost together without having Bob become corporeal, and that the sex works is a testament to her writing skill. Rather than use their incapability to touch as evidence of everything that keeps them apart, she shows it up as a bridgeable gap that can be overcome by the medium of words.

Title: Kinda Like That Movie With Sandra Bullock [1], [2], [3] offsite Story Length: ~ 82 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: questionable consent
Pairing: Jack Carter / Nathan Stark Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Character Study, First Time, Humor Recommended: 11 Nov 2007
Summary: Carter gets a love potion spilled on him. Stark has an unexpected reaction. Things get kinda complicated from there.
Review: This story begins like the stereotypical Eureka episode, and after presenting the accident-of-the-week-at-Global, proceeds to explore the dynamics between Sheriff Carter and his favorite verbal sparring partner, Dr. Stark. Aside from the two of them, the other regulars have only short cameos, but the author manages to sketch their personalities believably with only a few lines of dialogue. Carter and Stark are both also wonderfully in-character, and what could have been a trite cliché instead turns into the best slash story of this fandom. We can only hope to see more from this author soon.

Series: Never Go Back Rating: R
Category: Het Warnings: none
Pairing: River Tam & Malcolm Reynolds Time Frame: Post-Movie
Genres: Angst, Character Study, Friendship, Romance Recommended: 11 Nov 2007
Summary: Mal is trying to be noble, much to River's exasperation.
Review: hereswith's character voices are simply perfect. Told from River's POV, this series is like a voyage of discovery: River is growing up, reconnecting with the world, with rationality, and with the fact that she is a woman. Determined and confident to win Mal's affections even in the face of his pangs of conscience, she proceeds to wear him down. Mal's characterization doesn't suffer despite the fact that the reader only sees him through River's eyes; to the contrary, his speech patterns and actions lend him an unparalleled immediacy that is a true testament to the author's skill.

Category: Het Warnings: references to past rape, underage
Pairing: River Tam & Jayne Cobb Time Frame: Post-Movie
Genres: First Time, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Jayne wakes up to find River in his bed. What the gorram hell?
Review: The relationship between River and Jayne has even more potential for conflict than pairing her with Mal, and Mnemosyne's portrayal of a night that turns their animosity into a sharing of comfort doesn't even attempt to whitewash their differences. The author walks a tightrope in regard to their characterizations. Her River is certainly damaged, but is no incomprehensibly babbling lunatic, and is determined to discover how to be a girl. Her Jayne is no thug, yet far from brilliant, and his wariness manages to hide only incompletely that basically, he is a good man at heart. Jayne's cabin is their meeting ground in which they find sanctuary. Brilliant.

Pairing: Bobby Hobbes / Darien Fawkes Time Frame: Mid-Series
Genres: Angst, Character Study, First Time Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Ever wonder what it's really like to be paranoid?
Review: Long, involved, focused on the characters, "Paranoia" is a story hard to shrug off. Far from taking Hobbes' paranoia as a joke, Lucy Hale expounds on what it means in Bobby's day-to-day life. Chilling, realistic and painful to experience, she takes her readers - as well as Fawkes - on a ride through Bobby's always present fears and, while attempting to allow for a happy ending, makes it clear that living with Hobbes' condition is no walk in the park and ultimately cannot offer any guarantees for the future.

Category: gen Warnings: none
Pairing: none Time Frame: Post-"My Man Jeeves" (Wodehouse) & Post-"Unnatural Death" (Sayers)
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, X-over with "Lord Peter Wimsey" Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Bertie Wooster has an unfortunate reputation for pinching things - necklaces, amber statuettes, umbrellas - a reputation that becomes dashedly awkward when Lord Attenbury's emeralds go missing. Fortunately his old friend Flim is on hand to straighten things out.
Review: Adina has melded Wodehouse's and Sayers' worlds so seamlessly that one is surprised that nobody came up with the selfsame idea much earlier. Told from Bertie Wooster's POV, the author has his voice down perfectly, but doesn't lose sight of Wimsey, Bunter et al either. In addition to a dashed intriguing mystery, her narration increasingly hints at a past of Wooster's that he has suppressed entirely in order to continue functioning, shedding a darker light onto what we know of his personality. In comparison to him, Wimsey - as damaged as he is by his war experiences - seems to be coping admirably. Awesome.

Title: My Man Jeeves offsite Story Length: ~ 35 KB
Series: none Rating: R
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Bertram Wooster / Reginald Jeeves Time Frame: Post-"My Man Jeeves"
Genres: Established Relationship, Romance Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: The bunglings of an agency valet drive Bertie to flee to Jeeves' side - to continue a love affair that began over a typical domestic disaster...
Review: Sue's Wooster voice is also fabulous, and she applies it skillfully in describing not only Wooster and Jeeves' reunion after a short separation early in their intimate relationship, but also in describing in form of a flashback how that "additional eccentricity in the Wooster menage" came about. The author paints their abode as a haven from the usual rules of society, and brings them together without much drama, not letting their different social standing get in the way, but not ignoring it either. A charming little gem of a story with the single failing of not being longer.

Pairing: Sam Tyler / Gene Hunt Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Character Study, Established Relationship Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Circumstance makes strange bedfellows.
Review: I cannot recommend all Life on Mars stories by the author, but this one's Sam Tyler is just the right amount of desperate, angry and damaged. Hellblazer's Sam and Gene do not fit together easily, and the coarse carnality of their relationship with its necessary secrecy and the blow-ups caused by their conflicting personalities depicted in this story feels very authentic. Sam tries to fit in in 1973's Manchester, and the CID, without losing himself, and having Gene helps - for the moment.

Title: Taking a Shot | Settling Scores offsite Story Length: ~ 55 KB

Category: Slash Warnings: adult themes, borderline non-con
Pairing: "Sawyer" James Ford / Sayid Jarrah Time Frame: Season 1
Genres: Character Study, Episode Related Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: Sawyer gets more than he bargained for when he takes his revenge on Sayid.
Review: Jaye is very good at portraying a believable Sawyer even very early in canon, and makes his POV work for her stories. He tries to be ruthless and uncaring, and yet cannot truly be that persona, especially when Sayid's reactions throw him for a loop. Despite their animosity, Sayid is never truly in danger; in fact, judging by Sawyer's confusion, he has the upper hand in their confrontations, even if neither one of them consciously acknowledges it. The author concentrates on her cast of two, avoiding the other castaways as much as the series' plot, and truly excels in the microcosmos she's created.

Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jack Aubrey / Stephen Maturin Time Frame: Mid-"Post Captain"
Genres: AU, Character Study, First Time Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: When Stephen fails to turn up for a meeting he'd arranged with Jack, Aubrey goes in search of him and is surprised at the environment in which he finds him.
Review: Very well-written, very close to the style of the original books, this story is priceless for the images it evokes during the instances the author confronts Captain Jack Aubrey with the men frequenting the Asopichean Club in London. Aubrey is just as laid-back here as in canon; he has no moral objections and a laissez-faire attitude that Stephen Maturin should be used to, and yet at first doesn't know how to react to. Tippstaffs, hints at Maturin's work as a spy, Aubrey interacting with fellow naval officers - this story has it all, plus it causes such a feeling of mellow satisfaction in the reader that it is one of my all-times favorites. Also well worth a read is the author's series "Prizes Over Discovery".

Title: Duende offsite Story Length: ~ 82 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: none
Pairing: Jack Aubrey / Stephen Maturin Time Frame: AU not specified
Genres: Action/Adventure, AU, First Time Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: In this fantasy AU, wind worker Jack Aubrey ends up making a name for himself after acquiring an unusual swordmaster.
Review: shalott's writing is as outstanding as ever, and both her stories listed above are, while wildly different in subject matter, perfect examples of her skill in storytelling, and completed adventures on their own. Great characterizations, great minutiae, plus admirable research for "Invasion". Furthermore, one can't help but be caught up in the excitement over Aubrey assembling a small armada under his command, trying to beat back Napoleon's forces; or sympathize with Aubrey upon him being saddled with someone his superior thinks is an incompetent swordmaster, only to applaud with glee when that first judgement turns out to be wildly inaccurate.

Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: It's not about what is right. It's about what they need.
Review: Dale's story is the only one I've found in this fandom pairing Don and Charlie that I don't have to suspend disbelief for when reading. She doesn't ignore the dictates of society that condemn sexual contact between siblings; no, her characters don't live in a fairytale world. Don and Charlie can't give each other up, but they daren't stay close to each other either, with Don hating himself for every slip-up and afterwards enforcing yet a greater distance. Still, Dale makes the best of an impossible situation by rewarding them with a tentatively hopeful resolution in the end.

Pairing: Jared Stone / Larimer Finch Time Frame: Post-Season 1
Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 22 Feb 2007
Summary: While investigating a case with Detective Finch, Marshal Stone considers where the trail has led him.
Review: Keiko Kirin takes it slow and approaches the topic carefully; she lets her characters say more with looks and silences than spoken words. Her Stone and Finch have grown comfortable, complement each other. The reader feels the same pull, the same inevitability, and yet lack of impatience - no agonizing heart-to-heart is required for both men to know what is going to happen once they have a little time to themselves after the current case. The measured pace gives the story authenticity in regard to the time period (the late 1880’s); all in all, "The Winter Trail" serves as a reminder of how much potential was lost when the show was cancelled far too soon.

Summary: Ziggy is dying and Sam is losing it, so Al takes desperate measures to effect retrieval, which jeopardize his career and his relationships, and even his friendship with Sam.
Review: Sue has Al Calavicci disassembling the foundations of his life with a desperate determination that is painful to watch and yet impossible to turn away from. For Al and Sam both the end of Quantum Leap is in sight: Sam, because he's giving up on returning home, Al, because the project is on the verge of being shut down. The changing times and realities emphasize the limitless possibilities of how this could turn out, while the switching POVs constrain the vastness to a number of outcomes considered acceptable resp. unavoidable by the protagonists. Flawless writing and well-fleshed out secondary characters make this story even more accessible. Fabulous.

Review: Admittedly I haven't watched too many episodes of "Scrubs", but from what I've seen, this story is very much in character with the show. As a reader at least passingly familiar with the show, one will pretty much see the events playing on a tv screen in their imagination. We have voiceovers, we have slapstick, we have J.D.'s fantasy embellishing and allegorizing what happens around him, we have snarky dialogue, oh, and plenty of girls' names. This story is simply fun, but sadly so far the only one in this fandom Sabine has written.

Summary: Lex can't let this Cassandra thing go.
Review: The author employs a style - especially her abbreviated sentences - that takes some getting used to, but it really works for this story. In this clever abridgment of the development of the Superman-Lex Luthor adversity with its inevitable conclusion, Spike veers off sharply before the end and changes history. Post-episode 1x06 - "Hourglass", her Lex cannot escape his visions of a catastophic future until Clark works out what small a thing it takes to change that fate. Even certain doom can be averted; it just takes a little faith and trust. This story leaves the reader with the very real regret that canon runs along different lines.

Summary: Admiral Piett escapes the destruction of the Executor and reaches the surface of Endor. Here he encounters Ewoks, colleagues and Rebels.
Review: Strangely enough, I discovered early that slash to neither of Lucas' trilogies appealed to me - however, gen fanfic focusing on background characters - and Imperial officers at that - did. The author and her friends at the Star Wars Literary Guild decided to like Admiral Piett despite his rather small role in Star Wars V and VI, and their enthusiasm is infectious enough to capture anyone interested in the Imperials' side of the story. Monika E. Simon's Ewoks are no "fuzzy, cutesy teddy bears", and her Imperial officers are honorable, resourceful men who fought in a war they did not necessarily believe in. This is a novel-length adventure story with great characterizations that is virtually unputdownable.

Genres: Character Study, Friendship Recommended: 11 Nov 2007
Summary: Matt would be a whole lot less decisive and confrontational if not for Danny.
Review: Of Aaron Sorkin's shows, Studio 60 is the one with the smallest (slash) fandom, admittedly at least partially because the show degenerated into one big het romance. Still, it has its moments, and so has the friendship between Matt and Danny. The author doesn't ignore Matt's amour fou with Harriet, but successfully relegates all references to it to the background, focusing instead on the relationship between the two co-executive producers and best friends, who - and the show gives us that as well - have grown so close (some might say co-dependent) that they cannot imagine ever not working together. Matt needs Danny to push him so he can truly shine, and it's that support that this story is about. Brilliant.

Title: Leader of the Pack (art by digitalwave | art by dun | art by jessikast | art by retrofit88) offsite Story Length: ~ 85 KB
Series: none Rating: NC-17
Category: Slash Warnings: incest, violence
Pairing: Dean Winchester / Sam Winchester Time Frame: Season 3
Genres: Action/Adventure, AU, Character Study Recommended: 16 Feb 2008
Summary: The hellhounds were milling around her legs, almost high as her waist: pale white hides and red eyes, long red tongues lolling out between their stained teeth, all of them panting like the exhaust of an eighteen-wheeler and staring right at him.
Review: I read SPN only half-heartedly, because despite other people's efforts, the fandom bug hasn't managed to bite me in regard to Wincest. Still, shalott is as always a guarantor for high-quality fanfic, and this story manages to combine the dark background of the Supernatural canon with unexpected humor. Enough to get me hooked. Dean learns to arrange himself with a changing Sam as well as with a pack of (invisible) hellhounds, and the change in his feelings towards this major upheaval in his life is depicted in such a hilarious way that, in the end, an outsider's (saner) perspective - Bobby's - ends up being the uncomprehensible one. Funny, sweet, and so very plausible in its logical progression with Dean's basic character traits taken into consideration.

Title: A Change in the Weather (story index | author page @ TtH) offsite Story Length: ~ 297 KB
Series: none Rating: PG-13
Category: Het Warnings: unfinished WiP
Pairing: Buffy Summers & Jack O'Neill Time Frame: Post-Series (BtVS) & Season 8 (SG-1)
Genres: Action/Adventure, AU, Romance, X-over between BtVS & SG-1 Recommended: 11 Nov 2007
Summary: What happens when vague but disturbing visions bring Buffy to Colorado Springs?
Review: Fan fiction crossing Buffy with other fandoms usually disappoints, especially when set early in the series. Thankfully, AndreaB's joint universe with Stargate features a strong, mature Slayer; a girl who knows her own mind and is more than prepared to stand next to SG-1 as an equal. In addition to the perfect balance between the two worlds, it is the characterizations in this story that make it such a joy to read. Buffy is not a ditz; Jack is not an idiot. The POV differs with each chapter and allows each character a moment in the spotlight. Plus, the romance between Buffy and Jack shows how similar they are and reads so very true. A marvel.
