I discovered NCIS as a fandom in late 2007. Although I'd been aware of the existence of Gibbs/DiNozzo slash for several years, I initially stopped watching the show after the pilot. However, after a long stretch essentially without an active fandom, I decided to give it another try. I wanted a cop show, and the Navy/Marine angle sounded a little less run-of-the-mill. So I watched the J.A.G. two-parter. And was hooked. At first, it was Gibbs' character that drew me in. A conflicted, withdrawn and yet so deep personality hidden behind a gruff exterior (and in such a delightful package), interacting with a host of people who all had at least one delightful quirk - what wasn't to like? Then I began empathizing with Tony. A multitude of Tony-whump stories later, I kept taking his side in any confrontation. Gibbs/DiNozzo might be the most (canonically) unbalanced pairing ever, but there are a few authors who manage the tightrope act of writing them in-character and yet make them work in a healthy relationship. Beware of the rest of the fiction, however - the majority of it tends to be abysmal.


The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Summary: Tony needs some time off after episode 3x12 "Boxed In", and months later invites Gibbs to his sanctuary, a cabin in rural Virginia, so he can come to terms with the events of episode 3x24 "Hiatus Pt. 2" without having to leave for Mexico.
Review: Not surprisingly, it was Katherine - again - who managed to convince me that this fandom was worth a try. I'd already read through a couple of Gibbs/DiNozzo stories on the two main archives, and the horribly common D/s angle - with Tony as the submissive partner - had turned my stomach and made me question the wisdom of continuing. As usual, her novels are long, substantial, and while offering insights into the characters, their actions and the emotions guiding them feel like a genuine extrapolation of the people we know from the show, her exploration especially of what drives Tony feels right on-target and never descends into melodrama or self-pity. The typos are easily forgiven.

Summary: The death of a lieutenant leads to odd twists and her daughter's fate is in the balance.
Review: I was amazed at how NCIS dealt with Kate's death; for once, a main character wasn't instantly forgotten; for once, we were shown the aftermath and her colleagues' mourning. This gem of a story focuses on Tony and shows his difficulty coping in the time post-episode 2x23 "Twilight". Kate's presence is so tangible he sees her around, just like in canon. "Tin Star" doesn't show Tony letting her go - rather the opposite -, but somehow, it is the kind of goodbye from her character that she deserved. Introspective, self-indulgent, marvellous.

Summary: The summer is particularly hot, and it's difficult to sleep.
Review: rebecca usually writes Gibbs on top, but in this story she went against convention. The reader can almost feel the heat of the summer night, the languishment, the contentment, as Gibbs is first woken by, then made love to by Tony. His bed is like an island out of space and time, and although the words are not spoken, the reader knows well enough what is implied. rebecca is an extraordinary author, and not only in this fandom. I might not always agree with her view of the characters, but regarding this particular story, we're in perfect accord. More!

Summary: Tony doesn't become team leader overnight. First, they have all have to watch movies, develop new neuroses, and make flowcharts.
Review: I have issues with how Gibbs left in episode 3x24 "Hiatus Pt. 2" and later came back, but they'd be too numerous to list here. Let's just say that this story is exactly how I'd like to picture the time when Tony was team leader, with all of them bruised and closing ranks in order to keep the sharp-edged world out. Tony worries, and cares, and tries to protect what is now his. These ten shapshots say it all, and the only regret I have is that the new closeness Tony's team shares in this story didn't follow them into the reality of Season 4. Sweet and funny, yet with an underlying thread of longing to it. The sequel is less clear-cut, but hurts so very good, too.

    • ljtwoweevils are two authors who write a lot of excellent NCIS fanfic, most of it Gibbs/DiNozzo slash. I especially recommend the Semper Fi series.
