The New Professionals was another fandom I read slash in a long time before I had the chance to watch the episodes of. Right from the beginning, I found myself intrigued with Chris Keel, an ex-Navy SEAL who'd lost his wife at their very wedding. Despite the fact that canonically, he and Sam Curtis hadn't been partnered for very long, they seemed very close and utterly slashable - as proven by the fact that they both fiercly held hands in the pilot when Keel was sitting atop a bomb with the timer counting down to zero. They had very different personalities, trust issues and still bantered like Bodie and Doyle on their best day. The connection to the original series was loose at best (Cowley's name was mentioned and his picture used, but neither Bodie nor Doyle were ever spoken of) and the legal issues as unbelievable as in the 70s (supposedly CI5 is international now and has no need for things like search warrants or proper identification), but still - Curtis and Keel had something. Thankfully, quite a lot of authors saw it the same way.


The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Summary: Thin motel walls and misunderstandings.
Review: It was Alyse's "Conversations Series" that made me fall for The New Professionals in the first place. Its emphasis is on the slowly developing relationship between Curtis and Keel although a few cases intrude, but most of all it is about both partners opening up and letting each other into their lives. It is one of her early works and therefore Alyse uses quite often the characters' nationality to describe who's doing what, but apart from that, the series is very well-written, heartfelt and offers a deep insight into the two men's feelings and motivations. "The Pleasure/Pain Principle" also touched me a lot. It shows how powerful and all-affecting misunderstandings can be, and how easy it is to hurt someone, be it with words or actions. Thankfully, Alyse decided to resolve the conflict in the end. Beautiful.

Review: Alyse and Chya are an unstoppable team where long, dramatic stories full of angst and suspense are concerned. They take visible delight in making the characters go through hell, but thankfully, each of their novels has a happy ending. Again, the repetitive use of "Englishman" as a synonym for Curtis is a little off-putting, but definitely a minor factor that pales to insignificance once the reader is engrossed in the story and soon finds herself hanging on to her seat by her fingertips. Spies, intrigue, Curtis' past in MI6, believable original characters and addictive plots - make sure you have a few hours, because stopping in the middle of each story will be impossible, I promise.
