sports night fan fiction

Sports Night was my first conscious encounter with the genius that is Aaron Sorkin, and for a long time I resented The West Wing for depriving us of a possible third season of its younger brother on another network after Sports Night's cancellation by ABC. I usually hate comedy and switch off as soon as I hear a laugh track, but Sports Night's mix of comedy and drama convinced me from the get-go, especially since I'd already watched the internet explode with slash after the pilot. Watching Dan's on-air apology for the first time cemented that feeling, plus the deep caring between Dan and Casey drew me in. Add to that the joy of the fast-paced banter and repartees flying between the characters, and I was hooked. The show taxed my understanding of US English and almost managed to dishearten me, but Cori Lannam's scripts and transcripts provided the necessary lifeline. Now the show is out on DVD and I can give my poor 3rd generation tapes a rest. Dan + Casey ? = Fun.

The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Review: Cita is the queen of the AU novel, but "Masking Tape" proves that she is also very good at writing in the canon universe. While the dialogue in "The Hart and the Lion" is not as rapid-fire and Sorkinesque as on the show and the relationship between these AU-versions of Dan and Casey by necessity not that of equals until almost the end, there is still some undefinable something in her characterizations that makes "Daniel el-Rydal" Dan and "Casey Mackall" Casey. In "Masking Tape" the banter between Dan and Casey is pure gold, and the plot is the most cringe-worthy one I've ever encountered (embarrassment! blushing!). Not to be missed.

Review: Cori Lannam is a very good writer and used to be very caught up in Sports Night. Her dialogue is very similar to the one on the show and her characterizations are utterly believable. While her stories all contain angst, they are thankfully free of the emotional upheaval and hysteria of the second season. They focus on Casey coming to terms with the fact that he and Dan feel more for each other than simple friendship. Enjoy.

Review: Emily Brunson is an extraordinary writer in a multitude of fandoms, and she got into Sports Night practically with its first episode. All her stories were written and are set in the first season and as such lack the personal details revealed about Dan and Casey later in the series. Her Dan is less emotionally fucked-up than her Casey and holds it together when Casey goes to pieces. Em is especially famous for her "Dancing on Glass" WiP that can also be found on her page, but I like these two stories best as they are the perfect example for early Sports Night slash.

Casey doesn't want to listen until he has his eyes opened. Review: Kit Higgins was as unhappy with the Dana & Casey courtship in the show's second season as I, and decided to write to combat her frustrations. The result is an not very nice portrayal of Dana, but a forceful!Dan that I find extremely convincing. The series is a bit too sweet towards the end, it lacks Sorkin's dialogue and has some POV switches between paragraphs, but I like how Kit delves into Dan's protective side and shows him taking on even Dana to prevent yet another woman from manipulating Casey's feelings. Dan gets mad, Casey gets cold and angry, and in the end, they get happy. The perfect solution. Now if only the "Mad Series" could be found online again...

Review: Lanning Cook's "Being An Anchor" blew me away when she posted it, and that feeling hasn't changed. I usually hate post-rape fics that lovingly detail the recovery process of the victim, but this story is the first that has proven me wrong. Perhaps it's because both it and its sequel are so deeply emotional and touching that you feel like you're involved in the progress yourself; perhaps it's because it's not from Casey's, the victim's, POV, but rather from Dan's, who's the one to help him through it. The banter - what there is - is true to the show, the relationships between Dan, Casey and the others on "Sports Night" are exactly what we've been shown, and it's so very beautiful to be witness to an exceptional friendship.

Review: Shrift and Nestra's double feature is pure sex. Dan and Casey get a little bit drunk, look at each other, lust and get horizontal. That might not sound like a lot of plot (and it isn't), but the stories' sheer hotness makes them a joy to read. What we get of dialogue and interaction is spot-on, and there is no angst and no outer world trying to intrude. This is the virtual equivalent of popcorn, and boy - does it taste good.

Title: The First Move Story Length: ~ 58 KB Series: none Rating: R Category: Slash Warnings: none Pairing: Dan Rydell & OFC, Dan Rydell / Casey McCall Time Frame: Season 2 Genres: Angst, Pre-Relationship Recommended: 23 May 2000 Summary: Dan dates, and Casey studies up on Rodgers and Hart song lyrics. Then he studies up on Dan. Review: "The First Move" starts out from Casey's POV, although later scenes from Dan's POV are introduced. Despite the fact that near the end, the POVs get tangled up a little, Sinead's style and familiarity with the characters make this a joy to read, last but not least because of the story transmitting such a sense of a calm, inevitable, natural progression that it's no wonder Dan and Casey end up together. Relaxing and sweet.
