star trek: the original series fan fiction

Star Trek: The Original Series was my first fandom. I discovered it almost by accident when a friend lent me the novelization of the third movie which prompted me to go watch the fifth movie when it was shown in the cinema in town. I know that many people consider "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" the worst of the ST movies ever made, but the friendship between Kirk, Spock and McCoy fascinated me and led to my buying and reading all the Blish novelizations of season 1 to 3. Ralph Sander's compendium to the series hinted at the existence of K/S, and when I joined a ST fanclub I was sent excerpts from a K/S zine that made me first blush madly, then become intrigued. I ordered the zine. Then I found out via Highlander that slash was very much present on the web and started searching there, too. I always knew Kirk and Spock belonged together, and books like "The Vulcan Academy Murders", "Strangers from the Sky" and "Killing Time" only reinforced that belief. Thankfully, the internet has a number of stories in which Spock is depicted as I see him - not asexual, but remote, private and Vulcan... and very much in love with Jim Kirk.


The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Please abide by these criteria and only read what you're comfortable with/allowed to access. I will not be responsible if you don't.

Summary: T'Ciall, child of the Vulcan desert, accepts T'Pau's proposition to become Spock's bondmate - but even in the fever of Ponn Farr, his body fails her, and his unguarded thoughts reveal her who he's really longing for.
Review: Arachnethe2 is not a native English speaker and her editor, Greywolf the Wanderer, has decided to preserve the flow of the words, even if, on occasion, that means that the language used is not proper English. The result is a feeling of somewhat old-fashioned dignity which fits in with the fact that the greater part of the story is written from a Vulcan's point of view, T'Ciall. Arachnethe2 has decided to fall back on an old cliché, Ponn Farr, but her Spock is exactly the one I always picture in such a situation, her Vulcans are what I imagine them to be, and although I would have loved a bit more interaction with Sarek and Amanda, I like this story very much for its insight into the Vulcan society and the clan of the Psaikihsu, T'Ciall's people, that Arachnethe2 has invented. Lovely.

Summary: Spock is preparing himself for giving over his Katra to his grandson, S'James, and shares his memories of his T'hyla with the young Starfleet cadet.
Review: Most of the time, I prefer to pretend that Star Trek VII - Generations never happened since a part of me still cannot imagine a Star Trek universe without James T. Kirk in it. I would have very much preferred if Picard had been killed instead of Kirk. Kirk is human, and it has always been a given that he would die many years before Spock. Despite all that, I cannot help but like Elenadia's story. She is very true to canon and the characters both, and paints beautifully with words a bond that transcends death.

Summary: Spock is light-years away when Kirk "dies" on Veridian III.
Review: This is the fix-it I was unconsciously waiting for after Star Trek VII - Generations. Elise's style and faithfulness to a single point of view - Spock's - serves to let the reader feel Spock's isolation and anger as if it were our own. Spock's past, even his time on Romulus, feels as though he was only drifting, until the re-appearance of the Nexus and with it the bright spark of Kirk's consciousness light up his spirit, ripping him out of his complacency and setting him onto the logical path at whose end stands the only outcome he can live with. Stark, ruthless, miraculous and such a fitting ending for Starfleet's most famous duo.

Summary: After "Amok Time", Spock learns that his Fever has only abated for a short time - Vulcan physiology demands that he mates... or dies.
Review: Greywolf is my favorite author in Star Trek: The Original Series. His ability to depict the deep bond between Kirk and Spock is unparalleled, and his characterizations are always spot-on. His Spock is the controlled Vulcan we know, and yet he is vulnerable deep inside at a point only Kirk can touch. His "Songs of the Dirhja" trilogy is the most heart-breaking drama I've ever encountered whereas "Lost Sailor" is content to rely on the topic of Ponn Farr. Spock does not want to force Kirk into something he is not prepared to handle, and Kirk would do anything to save the man he loves. Simply beautiful.

Review: Killashandra's "Cover of Night" always, always manages to push my emotional buttons - no matter how many times I read it. A skillfully interwoven tapestry of show- and movieverse, this story makes the transition from the 5-year-mission to James T. Kirk's promotion and Spock's departure for Gol seamless and utterly believable. Style, characterization, actions, logical progressions - one of the best K/S stories I've ever read.

Summary: Kirk has been avoiding Spock, causing the Vulcan and McCoy to worry. The doctor corners him and suggests he has a talk with Spock.
Review: T'Pat's writing is more humorous than the authors I usually recommend, although the author hits very well the tone of the show. "Where the Dreams" reminds me a bit of "The Vulcan Academy Murders" because of the way (and the detail) the establishing of the mental bond between Kirk and Spock is described. T'Pat prefers fade-outs to explicit sex scenes and focuses on the emotional/mental closeness that slowly forms. While the "Dreams" series consists of eight stories in total, I prefer the first story in the series.

Review: UKJess' story showcases a total role-reversal between Kirk and Spock, and yet in the way she lets the events unfold, said reversal is entirely... logical. Ever since episode 1x12 "The Conscience of the King", I bet we've all wondered just how young Jim Kirk lived through the atrocities of Tarsus IV when so many didn't. Kirk is canonically a very practical man, and it is no stretch at all to believe that that as well as his leadership abilities lead him to make a rational decision on something that, perversely, Spock has far more trouble accepting. Well-written, plus emotionally very satisfying. What more can you ask for?

Summary: Captain Spock records his final messages for Leonard McCoy, Cadet Saavik, and Admiral Kirk.
Review: In my opinion, this is the best 'revelation' story in this fandom. Spock admits his feelings, Kirk learns about them. Even the fact that Kirk has just lost Spock is no hindrance since we know that the events of Star Trek III - The Search for Spock will commence any second and give them the chance that fate has denied them before. Wildcat concentrates on the essential; "Lost Words" is short and to the point, and the underlying sadness comes more from that the reader knows than what the story says. Skillful, understated - a work of art.
