the west wing fan fiction

The West Wing is a show created by Aaron Sorkin and as such as close to perfect as a tv series can get... at least until Thomas Schlamme and Sorkin left or were forced to leave (opinions differ on the reasons) and John Wells took over. Witty, fast-paced, moralistic without being tedious, it used to be an esemble show extraordinaire for four seasons - the pale imitation that its watchers had to settle for afterwards cannot hold a candle to the original. In the show, Democratic President Josiah Bartlet had been elected to the highest office in the United States and now had to face various challenges of different natures, supported by his family and his senior staffers whose offices are located in the West Wing of the White House. Despite several disagreements, disappointments and tragedies and through two terms, President and staff would walk through fire for each other (which they did more than once, figuratively speaking) and do their best to change America for the better. The contrast to reality couldn't have been bigger - iff only the "Bartlet for America" campaign had been real...

The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. A mystery is afoot. Does it have something to do with Josh's missing coffee mug? And what is CJ hiding in her office? Why is Donna in Ainsley's cupboard with Sam? Review: This is a veritable comedy of errors, and one that feels just like the show itself to boot. The dialogue is spot-on, the characterizations are perfect, and the slapstick is a work of art. If you are in need of a cheer-up after too much drama, read this.

How can she sit by and watch him drift away? Review: MAHC is usually a very good gen writer, but this story is my guilty little secret. The Donna MAHC writes about is quite obviously a Mary Sue, the people whose names we think we know behave very much OOC - in fact, the whole plot is only marginally connected to the real West Wing since the author uses the show's setting as a jumping board to launch her own romance novel. Why do I like it? I don't know. As an original story, we would be calling it a Harlequin romance, even a "Cinderella" rip-off, and hide it from sight in embarrassment. Still, it is strangely addictive. If you dare, see for yourselves.

Review: Nomad takes up all those personal cues we know from the first three seasons of the show and weaves them expertly into an entirely new tapestry - Josh's PTSD, Leo's drinking, the President's M.S., Sam's growing disillusionment, Zoey and Charlie's relationship, etc. She also has no obvious favorite, and all staffers get the same attention. The end result is so gorgeous you won't miss the show at all; it all fits: dialogue, personal interaction, political situation, all the great and small details of what we've come to know and love. If you don't want to read but one story in this fandom, choose this one. You won't regret it.

Review: A multiple 2003 Jeds Winner, this story deserves every award it got and is perfect for all Josh-lovers out there. Josh has to suffer through an unimaginable ordeal with little to no help from his friends, and learns how fleeting the things that we usually take for granted in life. The impact on Josh and Donna - and their relationships with the other White House staffers - is portrayed in an utterly believable way, the drama is heart-wrenching and immediate, and the whole storyline makes you want to take up arms in Josh's defense. SpitzTheCat is an extraordinary writer - whose other stories are certainly worth checking out as well.

Review: Xanthe's stories are a bit of an antagonism for me. Part of said problem is the fact that I cannot imagine that any US President and Chief of Staff could manage to pursue a sexual relationship while in the White House and not have it come out and ruin them. The second is that while I understand the emotional appeal of that pairing, the aesthetic one is severely lacking. Nonetheless, I admire the backstory (Xanthe's whole "June 17th" universe) the author has created and the ease with which she manages to blend the past she invented with the canon of the show.
