the x-files fan fiction

When the X-Files hysteria started, I avoided getting drawn into it by the simple means of not even watching a single episode. What happened then is what happens every time you say "never" to a new fandom: you fall for it, hard. I discovered Mulder/Krycek slash via a due South author's other work, begged tapes from mareen, read whatever I could get my hands on, and was captivated by the complicated relationship between Fox Mulder and Alex Krycek. From partners to mortal enemies, to reluctant allies, to... lovers? At least that's what fandom said, and I agreed. No matter how little I care for Chris Carter's botching of the mytharc in the later seasons, I'll always be grateful to him for that kiss in "The Red and the Black", and for the tremendous potential inherent in Krycek's character. Fandom was certainly an experience although I avoided the extremes of the spectrum - the Krycek-defenders who excused or denied his crimes, and the people who saw him as a sociopath without a conscience. I prefer the middle ground and am wholly comfortable in denying the events of "Existence". Krycek, dead? I must have misheard.

The stories are sorted by author and are most likely a mix of gen, possibly even het, and of course slash (of various pairings). Each story is clearly labeled as to its content and rating. Please abide by these criteria and only read what you're comfortable with/allowed to access. I will not be responsible if you don't.

Mulder is kidnapped by Alex Krycek. Review: Imajiru's "Departure" series has always held an unparalleled fascination for me. Part of me is horrified at the storyline, how Mulder falls victim to the Stockholm Syndrome, loses his independence, his life, part of me is utterly captivated by the insight into his and Krycek's feelings and the pure, unmitigated need that drives them together. No, this is not an easy, comfortable story, but it still has a surprising sweetness, especially since Imajiru manages to turn her protagonists' lives full circle again and lets them return to the beginning in a plot twist of fairy tale proportions. This story is disquieting and deeply addictive; once you've started you won't be able to stop reading. Don't miss this.

Title: Falling Into His Eyes [1], [2] Story Length: ~ 127 KB Series: Falling Into His Eyes Rating: NC-17 Category: Slash Warnings: rape, references to past rape, violence Pairing: Fox Mulder / Alex Krycek Time Frame: Season 6 Genres: Action/Adventure, Drama, First Time, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 20 Jul 2008 Summary: After rescuing Mulder from a warehouse where he was being tortured, Krycek takes him to a motel to question him. There, they unexpectedly gain a new understanding of each other that leads to another meeting in Mulder's apartment six months later. Review: I have to admit to a secret liking for 'Krycek saves Mulder' stories, and this one's certainly one of the best of its subgenre. KinkyGrrl's Krycek is dangerous and yet safe for Mulder at the same time, and her Mulder is beaten down, but not broken. They both are - and remain - part of their own individual worlds, and yet they meet on a level beyond their ideologies, where they're same and equal and able to share comfort. Unfortunately, that also means that the storyline lacks a nice and easy resolution.

Review: There are not a lot of Samantha stories out there, and of the few around, this is certainly the one we'd all have loved to see come true on the show - Mulder is finally reunited with his long-lost sister. In the aftermath of the Manicured Man's death, Ladonna King gives Alex Krycek the unparalleled opportunity to gain Mulder's forgiveness by saving the one person he would do anything for: his sister. The author's grasp of the checks and balances that are essential for a détente with the Consortium are very believable, and the touch of fairy tale dust that lies over this story makes it all the sweeter. This is the happiest ending for Mulder's quest one could imagine - the ultimate feel-good story of this fandom.

After a sexual encounter changes Mulder and Krycek, both struggle to let go of the past.

Review: I like Louise's stories, I really do, although her experimental style throws me a bit. She likes to use 1st person POV and sometimes the emotions it's intended to convey don't feel very deep or real to me. Still, I have to admit that I was utterly captivated by both "Chemistry Book" and "Echo Lane" and came to visit her website daily in the hopes of a new update when the stories were posted. She portrays very well the various levels of attraction and hostility between Mulder and Krycek and their inability for a long time to let go of past hurts and achieve some sort of middle ground where they are no longer ruled by the Consortium's influences on their lives. Addictive.

Title: Hardened Criminal [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] (story index) Story Length: ~ 575 KB Series: Hardened Criminal Rating: NC-17 Category: Slash Warnings: borderline non-con, graphic m/m sex and violence, rape Pairing: Fox Mulder / Alex Krycek Time Frame: not specified Genres: Angst, AU, BDSM/Kink, Drama, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 16 Feb 2002 Summary: Young Alex Krycek serves hard time in jail for gaybashing and manslaughter. One of the guards there is named Fox Mulder - and is a friend of the dead gay man's lover. Review: I have to confess that my primary reason for reading this epic was its length, and while I like it enough to recommend it here, I must admit that I still have some problems with the issue of consent in this story. I adore Nicole and Orithain's AU setting in which Samantha is still alive, Mulder has nothing to do with the X-Files and can be happier and less driven, and where his relationship with Krycek is not poisoned by the old accusation of Krycek killing his father. The authors make sure that there is still a sizable obstacle that serves almost the same purpose, and their writing is tight, very emotional and captivating. The parallels to "Oz" are undeniable, but most of all, I have some problems with the fact that Krycek entered a happy m/m relationship with Mulder after having been raped repeatedly by him in prison. Despite my ambivalent feelings, the story is definitely a must-read in this fandom.

Title: Cauterized Story Length: ~ 76 KB Series: none Rating: NC-17 Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex and violence, questionable consent, rape Pairing: Fox Mulder / Alex Krycek Time Frame: Season 4 Genres: Angst, Character Study, Drama, Episode Related, Hurt/Comfort Recommended: 16 Feb 2002 Summary: Krycek returns from Tunguska a changed man and now he wants his revenge on Mulder. His ounce of flesh. Review: I read this story at the height of the events at the The Cube/Fight Club archive and had to stop every few paragraphs to scream. Yes, this story is a bit sick - or rather, its Krycek is. But it's also beautiful in its consistent exploration of the psyche and subsequent actions of an Alex Krycek wounded and mad beyond reason. Similarly outstanding is Satina and Orangy's portrayal of Mulder who is a skilled psychologist, although both Chris Carter and the show's fans seem to forget that more often than not. Krycek and Mulder spark against each other, but it is exactly this spark that helps them build a tenuous connection that lets Krycek step back from the precipice before it is too late. I'll always be grateful to Satina and Orange for a truly outstanding story and only regret that they've written no new collaborations since.

Title: Christmas Carol Redux [1], [2] Story Length: ~ 247 KB Series: Christmas Carol Redux Rating: NC-17 Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex Pairing: Fox Mulder / Alex Krycek Time Frame: Season 3 Genres: AU, Character Study, Episode Related, Fix-It, Hurt/Comfort, Supernatural Recommended: 20 Jul 2008 Summary: On Christmas Eve, Mulder has a revealing experience and ends up traveling to Terma, North Dakota. Review: Set post episode 3x16 "Apocrypha", Satina's version of Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" tells a story different from canon as to how Alex Krycek got out of the silo. Supernatural intervention finally helps Mulder acknowledge Krycek as a three-dimensional person. After the rescue, the author forces them into rapprochement by means of cooping them up together in a motel room. Seeing Krycek helpless, her Mulder can allow himself to abandon blind hatred, whereas her Krycek is deliciously vulnerable. I might not like all of Satina's stories, but this one is perfect.

Title: Degrees [1], [2], [3] Story Length: ~ 114 KB Series: Degrees Rating: NC-17 Category: Slash Warnings: graphic m/m sex Pairing: Fox Mulder / Alex Krycek Time Frame: Season 5-6 Genres: Angst, Romance Recommended: 20 Jul 2008 Summary: An unexpected meeting in a liquor store on Christmas Eve is the catalyst for a complete change of the relationship between Mulder and Krycek. Review: Shannon, Satina's "partner in crime", also isn't someone I like every story of, but this series focused on three holidays is outstanding. Years after their partnership ended with Krycek's betrayal, she makes them relive it in an instant of wordless communication and effortless trust. From there, a change in Mulder's behavior towards Krycek is inevitable, and from that truce she lets them come together in one breathless moment that, while written from Mulder's POV, lets the reader experience Krycek's courage and terror more immediately than several paragraphs from Krycek's POV would have managed. Add to that a supportive Scully, and this series leaves nothing to be desired.

At the same time, Mulder is assigned on a missing persons case in Weimar, Pennsylvania. Review: This is one of the very few X-Files zines I ever bought, and it's one I'll never sell. I was immensely pleased when the publisher released it to the web, so that even more people could read it. It's beautifully written, and has everything I want in a Mulder/Krycek story - a case suited to Mulder's abilities, tension, anger, lust, danger, protectiveness, mocking, snark, aliens, betrayal, loyalty, fear, trust... all of it building a relationship that I buy completely. The case and Mulder and Krycek's developing closeness are interwoven into one perfect work of art that doesn't drag on at all, despite its length, but rather, at the end, leaves the reader with an acute and painful longing for just one more scene, and another, and another... Addictive.
