"Boy I have to hand it to Mike, he sure knows the best places for coffee in Cascade." Blair Sandburg said.

"You got that right." His companion, Daryl Banks, responded. "I'm really glad that Tom and I ran into you two."

The two rookie police officers would be graduating from the Academy in two weeks. Prior to that time, they were both walking beats with seasoned police officers.

"Me too," Blair responded, glancing back into the shop at the two older officers, who were having an animated discussion while fixing their coffee. Looking back to Daryl, he asked. "You excited about getting out of the Academy?"

"Yeah, and kinda scared too, I guess I never thought about how tough this job could be."

Blair smiled, "Well, we've both had first hand knowledge of that, more than once."

Daryl smiled back. "How about you? Bet you can't wait to get out and get back riding with Jim."

"Absolutely, but I have to admit, there is a part of me that feels guilty about being able to move straight into a detective's badge, while the rest of you have to pay your dues."

The younger man patted him on the back. "Hey, don't even think about that. I'd say you already paid your dues, like three times over."

"Thanks, I appreciate that." Turning back to look in the shop, he continued. "What's keeping those guys?"

Before Daryl could answer, the relatively quiet of the Cascade morning was shattered by a ringing alarm. Turning to look, the two rookies watched as two men, armed with guns ran from the bank across the street, shooting as they ran. Both officers tossed their unfinished coffee away, searching for cover.

The bank robbers however, had spotted them, and turned to aim toward them.

Blair was hit with the first bullet, just as he was diving for cover behind a parked car. Daryl felt the pain as the second bullet hit him, as he fell right behind Blair. Looking down, he saw blood oozing from a wound in his arm. 'Damn that stings,' he thought to himself.

Reaching over to Blair he said. "Hey, Blair, you okay."

A grunt was the reply, then Blair's pained voice, "No, not really."

Rolling the older man over, Daryl saw a blood stain rapidly expanding on the left side of Blair's uniform.

Suddenly another hail of bullets sailed over their head, and into the car in front of them, sending bits and pieces of the car and it's windshield raining down on them.

"Damn, we have to get out of here, Blair.

Jim Ellison braced his arm on the dash of the car as his Captain, Simon Banks, sped around another corner. Any other time, he would have made a remark about the quality of driving, in payback to the many remarks made regarding his.

Today however, he knew that the remark would not have been appreciated. Simon and he were responding to a call that had come into the precinct. A bank robbery gone wrong, with shots fired, and officers down. Those officers being Simon Bank's son, Daryl, and his own partner and best friend, Blair Sandburg.

As they came to an abrupt stop behind the police barricade, he grimly thought about the number of times both of the younger men had been put in danger in the last few years. This time though, it wasn't due to their associations with the elder Banks and himself. He'd had nightmares about this exact situation, ever since Blair had agreed to become a cop. He was sure that Simon had spent a few sleepless nights himself.

Hopping out of the car, both men ran over to the officers in charge. Ducking behind a cruiser. "Tom, Mike, what the hell happened here?" Barked Simon. "And where are Daryl and Blair?"

One of the uniformed police officers responded, at Simon, "God Captain, the answer to both questions is I don't know. Blair and I decided to grab a cup of coffee and ran into Daryl and Tom. Tom and I got to talking in the shop and Blair and Daryl headed outside. Next thing I know all hell is breaking is loose."

The other officer continued. "We both heard gunfire and looked out. Daryl and Blair both went down behind that blue Taurus over there. We made the call in and then went out the back door to circle around. By the time we got out here, the robbers had gone back into the bank, and Daryl and Blair were gone."

Motioning to the bank, Mike said, "The negotiating team is trying to talk the two of them out now. They're alone in there, but it looks like they're strung out on something. No one can start searching for Blair and Daryl for fear they'll start shooting."

Simon nodded his thanks to the two men and moved to talk to Jim, drawing him away from the other officers.

"Okay Jim, I can tell by the look on your face you're using your hearing here. Got anything?"

Nodding, Jim said. "Yeah, I think I do. First off, Mike's right, the two robbers are alone, and by the sound of things, they're about ready to give up. They're more scared than anything. More importantly, I think I found Blair and Daryl." Motioning to the alley running next to the coffee shop, he continued. "It sounds like they're in the alley. They must have moved there for more cover."

Looking at the wreckage of the Taurus, Simon nodded. "Smart move. Can you tell how they are?"

"I can hear both of their voices, so they're both conscious. Blair sounds like he's in more pain, but it's hard to tell."

Just then, there was a movement from the bank, and the doors opened and the two robbers emerged to be taken into custody.

As soon as the situation was secured, Jim and Simon moved toward the alley, Simon yelling for a medical team.

Daryl crouched down next to Blair, behind the dumpster the two had found in the alley. "How ya doing?"

Blair gave him a small smile, "Been better, been worse. How's your arm."

Daryl flexed it and grimaced. "Won't be able to pitch for a while, but should be okay. Listen, they're still in the bank, so we have to stay put for now. I'm going to head back up toward the street though, to see how things are going? You going to be okay?"

"Don't have much of a choice, do I?" Blair answered. Grabbing Daryl's good arm, he said. "You be careful, you hear me?"

Chuckling, the younger man answered. "Like Megan says, no worries man, no worries."

As he moved toward the entrance to the alley, he heard voices coming toward him from the street. Recognizing them, he let out a sigh of relief. They belonged to his dad and Jim, which meant that things must be all clear.

He met them just as they entered the alley. "Boy, and I glad to see you two."

Simon was the first to respond. "Daryl, thank God." Seeing the bloodstain on his sleeve, he continued. "Are you okay?"

"Actually, it hurts like hell, but I'll be fine." He said smiling.

Jim had been looking behind him, hoping to spy his partner. "Daryl, where's Blair?"

Daryl sobered quickly. " He's further back in the alley, behind the dumpster. He's been shot too, worse than I am. He's lost a lot of blood."

Jim gave him a pat on the shoulder as he ran past him. "Thanks Daryl. Simon, do me a favor and send the medics down to us?"

At Simon's nod, he continued down the alley, his hearing latching onto the sound of his partner's ragged breathing. Coming to a stop in front of Blair, he crouched down next to him. "Hey, Chief, how you doing?" He asked, reaching his hand out to tap Blair's face.

Blair opened his eyes slowly. "Hey Jim, bout time you got here man. You missed all the fun."

Jim chuckled, "yeah sounds like it." His hearing had rewarded him with the sound of a strong heartbeat. As the medics moved in, he stood to give them room. Patting Blair's face he said. "You just hang in there buddy, everything's going to be fine."

Simon opened the door to hospital room quietly, peaking in. Jim glanced up from newspaper he was reading. "Come on in Simon."

Moving into the room, the captain said. "I didn't want to disturb Sandburg if he was sleeping, just wanted to see how he was doing?"

Jim smiled. "He's going to be fine. The bullet went straight through, and didn't do much damage. They want to keep an eye on him for a few days though."

A sleepy voice from the bed said, "How's Daryl?"

Simon moved over to the bed. "He's fine, doctor's working on releasing him right now. He'll have to keep the arm in a sling for a while, then go for some physical therapy, but they're pretty sure that there will be no permanent damage."

"That's great news, right Chief?" Jim said.

"Sure is." Looking at Simon, Blair continued. "Simon I want you to know that your son was amazing out there today."

Simon looked slightly embarrassed. "Well chip off the old block and everything."

"No, all kidding aside, he saved my life today. He helped get me out of the street and into that alley, making sure I was safe before moving back to the front of the alley to keep an eye on things. Look, I know you weren't real keen on him becoming a cop. But he's going to make a great one. You should be really proud of him."

"Thanks, Blair, I appreciate that." Clearing his throat, he continued. "Well, I'm going to go see if my amazing son is ready to go home. I'll stop by tomorrow and check in on you." Looking at Jim, he said, "and before you ask, yes, take tomorrow off. Knowing you, you'll spend all night in the hospital anyway.

Jim chuckled, "you know me too well, Sir. But thank you."

As he opened the door, to leave, Simon looked back toward the two men who had become close friends. He'd spent too may nights looking at that same scene, or one slightly reversed. Each night he said a prayer to the Almighty to keep his brethren safe, now, his own son had joined the force and he had one more to add to the list. Sighing, he thought to himself, 'God I hope I'm strong enough for this. I hope we're all strong enough for this."
